Connect to University file storage in macOS

How to connect to a Uni network drive in macOS.

Connect to the University network

If your Mac is not connected to the Uni network by an ethernet cable or eduroam wi-fi, e.g. if it is a MacBook off-campus, please register for, set up and connect to the University Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to authenticate your computer:

Connecting to the VPN Service

On the University's supported macOS desktop

  1. Launch the Self Service.app from the dock or your Applications folder.
  2. Click on Shared Space on the right.
  3. Either choose Add My Network Home to Finder Favorites or search for the required School or department and click Add Share.
  4. If necessary, enter your username in the format ED\jbloggs and put in your University password.
  5. Tick Remember this password in my keychain and press Connect.
  6. A permanent mapping to the drive is added to the 'Favorites' list on the left of the Finder.

On non-supported Macs

  1. In the Finder, select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server...
  2. Type the path to the folder that contains the drive you wish to access, e.g.

smb://sg.datastore.ed.ac.uk/sg/usd/groups/

  1. Select Connect, enter your username in the format ED\jbloggs (or jbloggs@ed.ac.uk) and put in your University password.
  2. Tick Remember this password in my keychain and press Connect.
  3. From the folder that opens, drag the icon of the folder you require into the 'Favorites' list on the left of the Finder.
