Instruction in English
If your exchange is with a university in an English-speaking country, then you will study in English.
Students of English Literature or English Language on an exchange in these subjects will be taught in English, wherever you go to study.
English-taught courses may also be available in other subjects at some of our partner universities in Scandinavia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Czech Republic.
Instruction in the native language
Where teaching is in a language other than English, you will usually be expected to follow lectures, write essays, and take exams in the language of instruction.
Applicants must evidence a recent qualification demonstrating a minimum of level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
In the absence of formal evidence, you will be required to take a language test, to be arranged through the Go Abroad Office. You will be required to achieve at least Level B2 (on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) before taking up your exchange place.
Taking a language as an extra subject in your first and/or second years at Edinburgh is recommended as a means of ensuring that you are equipped, linguistically, for a year abroad.
