We advise to apply until the end of round two. In round three, applications will be considered at our discretion as long as places are available.

Supporting documents

Full supporting documentation is required to help us to assess your case as quickly and efficiently as possible.

We may need to contact you by email during the application process, so please use a valid email address in your application, and check it regularly after applying.

To be considered, your application must include:

  • Official transcripts for all years of your undergraduate studies to date
  • A degree certificate, if you have graduated. If you have not yet graduated then you may still apply without the degree certificate as long as your transcript is up to date.
  • Contact details for your referee.
  • If your transcripts or degree certificate are not in English, you must provide certified translated versions.
  • A 250-500 word personal statement describing the relevance of your knowledge, skills and training to this programme as well as your academic interests, objectives and motivation for undertaking postgraduate study.
  • A document summarising your most advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics courses, including details of the topics covered and the primary textbooks used.
  • Under Relevant Knowledge/Training skills, please provide brief details of any maths, statistics and economics courses you have taken, including main topics studies and textbooks used.

Graduate admissions exams

You can apply without having a graduate admissions test (such as GRE or GMAT) result, but we may stipulate that you must attain a specified grade on one of these tests as a condition of entry. Most important to us is that you have good quantitative knowledge and skills. In general, we look for a quantitative reasoning result in the 80th percentile or higher.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must have an English language certificate. You do not need to supply this at the time of application, but if we make you a conditional offer you will be required to supply the certificate before confirming your place on the programme.

Degrees taught and assessed in English must be no more than two and a half years old at the beginning of your degree programme. Language tests must be no more than two years old at the beginning of your degree programme.

English requirements for postgraduate entry

Degree certificate

If you have not yet graduated from your studies you do not need to supply your degree certificate as part of your application (though the system will automatically request this). If we make you a conditional offer, you will be required to provide your degree certificate before confirming your place on the programme.

Tuition fee deposit

Students applying for entry in the 2024/25 academic year will not be required to pay a tuition fee deposit.

Prospective students for future years should keep an eye on the website for updates.

Apply for the MSc Economics, MSC Economics (Econometrics) or MSc Economics (Finance)

Please do NOT apply for all programmes.  Entry requirements for all programmes are the same, and if you apply to all programmes, we will mark one as a duplicate application.   You can always request a change after receiving a decision or even after enrolment at Edinburgh.

Applications do not need to be completed in a single session. After you save and exit the application, an email will be sent to you with a link that will allow you to re-enter and continue.
