Biomedical Sciences

Dr Sharron Ogle, MSc Programme Director

I started my academic life as a medical student in Edinburgh over 20 years ago and have made my way back here by a rather circuitous route. Realising life as a doctor was not for me, I left my medical studies in the fourth year with honours in Medical Microbiology and went on to qualify as a high school teacher, teaching Biology and Science for 4 years.

I returned to the University of Edinburgh to study for an MSc in Reproductive Biology and a PhD in Veterinary Science. My studies mainly involved looking at the conservation breeding population of the babirusa, a wild suid from the islands of Sulawesi. During this time I was involved in studies with zoos, laboratories and universities in many parts of world, conducting genetic and hormonal analyses as well as some anatomical and studbook work.

I am now a lecturer with Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences where my primary responsibility is as Programme Director of the MSc in Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health. I have been developing the programme since 2009 and am happy to say that after a lot of hard work we now have a great team and some exceptional students.

In my free time I like to be outdoors and enjoy a range of wildlife watching and sports, especially cycling.
