Andrew Irving, Teaching Fellow

I joined the MSc teaching team in August 2022 with a focus on taking forward the ‘alternative’ 3rd-year masters project option. My background in ecology and conservation involves a number of different elements, including being a graduate of the BWEH programme!

My background in ecology and conservation involves a number of different elements, including being a graduate of the BWEH programme! I started in ‘boots on the ground’ practical conservation, working for a countryside management charity and looking after a number of nature reserves and countryside sites in the UK. Following this, I spent some time in environmental and community outreach project management, as well as teaching countryside and wildlife management at an agricultural college. Latterly, I have spent a number of years working as an ecologist in the planning, development, and policy sectors – supporting a local authority to meet, and at all opportunities, exceed, their duty to conserve biodiversity.

I entered the conservation field with the intention of developing my skillset in applied species and habitat ecology. However, the inextricability of social and ecological systems quickly captured my interest. My particular area of focus surrounds the integration of nature into the urban landscape, and how this can be used to reconnect society with environmental issues whilst still effectively conserving threatened species and habitats, and the efficacy of development policy and socio-ecological interventions for facilitating this.
