Attendance and Absence
Find out about our expectations for your attendance and what to do if you miss classes or other parts of your course.
Attendance
Where possible, you are expected to attend all classes for all your courses. A good level of attendance is a requirement to pass many courses and even if not, failing to do so can worsen your mark in that course.
Attendance is recorded in most classes and if a student is not engaged with their studies they will be contacted to check that they are well.
What you need to do

It is your responsibility to ensure that you sign any required attendance sheet.

You must also complete assignments by the deadline given in the course book unless you have been granted a coursework extension for that item.

It is essential that you read your University email regularly in case the time or location of any planned course components, such as tutorials, change.
If you miss classes for more than a week for any reason, you should contact your Student Adviser or email the Biology Teaching Organisation (BTO) Student Support Team.
If your absence also affects your coursework or exams they can also advise you on how to catch up.
An extension to a deadline for written coursework must be requested before the deadline and include supporting evidence. The maximum extension is seven calendar days.
If you submit an assignment late, a penalty will be applied which will reduce your marks. You should discuss the circumstances with your Student Adviser who can advise on making a case for special circumstances.
It's important you talk to your Student Adviser about any reasons that are affecting your attendance, failure to do so can have serious consequences.
If you fail to attend classes or other essential course components, you will be asked to meet with a Biology Teaching Organisation (BTO) Student Support Tutor to discuss your reasons for absence.
- Each course details what criteria are needed to pass the course in the course guide, and failing to meet these may result in failing the course.
- If you fail to attend an essential component, you may be able to attend a different instance of that course. Contact the course email for details.
