Designing for Complexity: Accounting and Visualisations in Major Programme Management

Topic: Designing for Complexity: Accounting and Visualisations in Major Programme Management

Supervisor: Paolo Quattrone
Group: Accounting and Finance

Research summary

Matteo's research aims to investigate how it is possible to conceptualise and operationalise principles for the representation, visualisation and integration of accounting information that embrace the ambiguity and incompleteness inherent to complex systems. Matteo is developing the theoretical framework of 'accounting as a design-oriented practice', on the basis of the systematic interrelation of the research domains of accounting and interaction design. This research is being undertaken in collaboration with Professor Chris Speed, Chair of Design Informatics at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), who is Matteo’s second supervisors.

The empirical setting of this project is the management of major infrastructure programmes, a context that presents unique challenges in terms of accounting, governance and management of complexity. The empirical aspect of this study aims to investigate how ambiguity is visualised and engaged with in the context of major infrastructure programmes, to shed light on how this impacts the governance and decision-making in such projects.

In August 2016, Matteo has been awarded an ESRC Kowledge Exchange grant to fund a secondment with a global design and consulting firm for natural and built assets.
