Fundraising - give something back to a good cause

Raising money for a cause close to your heart is an incredibly rewarding experience, as law student Christy Cunningham is well aware.

Christy is the Fundraising Officer on the Free Legal Advice Centre student committee, an organisation that has so far this year raised over £600 through events such as a carol concert in Teviot.

Together with another student, Joseph Arigho Stiles, Christy recently completed the University’s first firewalking challenge, walking barefoot across embers burning at 650 degrees Celsius (1,200 degrees Farenheit) to raise money for free legal advice.

Being involved in raising money for the free legal advice centre is incredibly important to me, as not having come from affluent background, I know how expensive seeking legal advice can be. I feel that this should never be a barrier, and that legal advice should be available to everyone, regardless of their income.

Development Trust

Firewalking is only one way the University can help you raise money for your chosen charity or project.

The University of Edinburgh Development Trust oversees all fundraising in aid of areas within the University - whether by organising events such as the firewalk, or helping you put your existing talents to good use.

Students have raised considerable sums of money for a wide variety of causes, including funding access bursaries for disadvantaged students, as well as medical and veterinary medical research.

Setting up a sponsorship page is easy, and can be done through the University’s JustGiving page.

Sponsorship forms and marketing materials can be found on the Alumni and Development website:

Upcoming Events

To get your fundraising started, the Development Trust have organised two thrilling events, zorbing and another firewalking session. Students are invited to take part to raise money for a project close to their hearts.

As well as the satisfaction of knowing you are helping a good cause, participating in these events will give you the opportunity to get more involved in the University community and try something new!

Zorbing costs £10 and students are asked to raise a minimum of £100. The firewalk costs £20 and students are asked to raise a minimum of £175.
