Introducing MEng Structural Engineering with Architecture

This programme combines a focus on structural engineering with an appreciation of the architectural context. The programme is taught jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture (ESALA), part of Edinburgh College of Art. You will spend approximately half your time taking architecture courses in Year 1. The architecture component continues in later years but the time spent in these courses is reduced as the focus shifts to core structural engineering courses.

This programme builds on many of the fundamental concepts of civil and environmental engineering including the application of scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools to the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of all major forms of infrastructure. The discipline of civil engineering is very wide ranging, impacting on our daily lives in diverse ways. Ultimately it aims to ensure a sustainable local and global society, particularly in light of current challenges such as global climate change.

The Structural Engineering and Architecture programme complements expertise at Edinburgh in the traditional areas of transport, tunnels, bridges, and buildings and which extends into emerging areas such as structural fire engineering, advanced geotechnical investigation and design, use of novel and/or sustainable materials, and advanced numerical modelling for particulate solids and structures.

We have strong industrial engagement via our Industrial Advisory Board and industrial input to teaching, including our design projects. There are opportunities for interaction with recent graduates working in industry and we offer a close-knit, supportive community within which to develop your engineering skills.

Work-experience and internships

All students are encouraged to undertake relevant work-experience during their programme and we work closely with the Careers Service to advertise internship opportunities and arrange company presentations.

We support your development of graduate attributes via our Edinburgh Award for Civil and Environmental Engineering Industrial Placements which is recognised on your academic transcript.

Accreditation

This programme is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Year 1

Your study will be divided equally between engineering and mathematics courses, and architecture, where you are introduced to architectural history and also design courses, including studio work.

Year 2

This year focuses on engineering fundamentals, supported by further study of mathematics and architecture history. You will extend the application of your scientific and mathematical skills to solving engineering problems, building on your experiences from Year 1, including some project work.

There is also a substantial laboratory element to many of the engineering courses giving you experience of practical engineering and experimental work.

Year 3

You will now focus entirely on study of core materials, spanning structural engineering and the architectural aspects of the construction and design of real buildings, supplemented by choice of two options, one of which may be in architecture.

At the end of Year 3, you will have the option of completing one more year for a BEng (Hons) or a further two years for a MEng (Hons).

Year 4

You will pursue advanced courses which deepen your fundamental knowledge in structural engineering and architecture, spanning a mixture of compulsory and option courses.

You undertake substantial design projects encompassing geotechnical engineering and interdisciplinary engineering.

Year 5

You will pursue further advanced courses in both structural engineering and architecture, together with further option courses. You will undertake a substantial structural engineering design project supported by experienced industrialists.

Half of the final year credits are allocated to the honours thesis, which is an original study of a challenging engineering problem, which may be undertaken either with architecture or engineering, or both.

Lectures take place in the George Square area during Year 1 and for all other years at the University's King's Buildings campus.

You will have access to the University's libraries and engineering and computing laboratories. Study materials are available online.

Programme details (2019/20)

Studying engineering at the University of Edinburgh prepares you for a career as a professional engineer in the UK or abroad and all courses meet the requirements of the UK professional engineering bodies.

On graduation from any of our programmes you will leave with a thorough, core knowledge, together with analytical, practical, design and communication skills, enabling you to join a design, production or research team - or move rapidly into management and leadership roles.

Standard entry requirement

The standard entry requirement is:

  • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S5. If you haven’t achieved this by the end of S5 we may consider your application based on a strong performance in S6. A minimum of BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
  • A Levels: AAA - ABB in one set of exams.
  • IB: 37 points with 555 at HL - 32 points with 555 at HL.

The minimum entry requirement for widening access applicants is:

  • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S6, with a minimum of BBB achieved in one year of S4-S6.
  • A Levels: ABB.
  • IB: 32 points with 555 at HL.

Required subjects

The grades used to meet our entry requirements must include:

  • SQA: Higher: Mathematics at grade A, and either Physics or Engineering Science.
  • A Levels: Mathematics, plus either Physics (preferred), Engineering or Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology).
  • IB: HL: Mathematics (from 2021, Mathematics: Analysis and approaches only) and one from Physics or Design & Technology.

Mature applicant qualifications

You must demonstrate a level of English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies, regardless of your nationality or country of residence.

SQA, GCSE and IB

For SQA, GCSE and IB students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

  • SQA National 5 Grade C

  • SQA Standard Grade 3

  • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A

  • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C

  • GCSE Grade C or 4

  • Level 2 Certificate Grade C

  • IB Standard Level Grade 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry)

English language tests

We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:

  • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component

  • TOEFL-iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section

  • Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component

  • PTE Academic: Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section

  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

There is a surveying field trip in Year 2. The cost is approximately £250, covering transport, accommodation, materials and other subsistence.
