Introducing MA Primary Education with Gaelic (Learners)
The MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic programme aims to support you to become a Gaelic-medium educator who will develop professional values of trust, respect, integrity and a commitment to the principles of social justice.
Based in the Moray House School of Education, you will have the opportunity to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of learning, of children as individual learners, and of the pedagogies associated with the primary curriculum.
Through extended and sustained professional practice in Gaelic-medium and English-medium schools, you will develop professional expertise, knowledge of the curriculum in action and a critical understanding of the complexities of school and community.
Additionally, MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) provides you with the opportunity to study courses in Celtic (School of Literatures, Languages & Cultures) and linguistics (School of Philosophy, Psychology & Language Sciences), exposing you to internationally renowned expertise in these subject areas.
Graduates of the programme are able to teach in Gaelic-medium or English-medium primary education.
The MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) programme is accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Upon graduation, all UK and EU students are able to register with the GTCS as provisionally qualified teachers and are guaranteed a one-year induction post in a Scottish school.
You will study primary studies, educational studies and Gaelic. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

You will spend a year at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, focusing on developing your Gaelic. You will complete An Cùrsa Comais, an intensive language learning course designed for intermediate level learners whose aim is to become fluent in Gaelic.
You will undertake a year-long school placement in a Gaelic-medium primary school.
You will experience a range of school stages and will work to develop the professional skills and abilities required for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
You will also study primary studies and educational studies (with a Gaelic-medium focus) during the year, coming back in to the University on specific weeks for classes.
You will study primary studies, educational studies (including a dissertation) and Theory and Pedagogy of Immersion and Bilingual Education.
You will select an option course from a suite of courses within the School of Education. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Most of the teaching will take place at Moray House School of Education, located at the Holyrood Campus within the University's Central Area.
You will also have access to the University's libraries and computing facilities.
You will engage in placement - professional experience and practice - throughout your programme. In Year 4 you will undertake a year-long professional experience and practice placement in a Gaelic-medium primary education setting.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, independent small-group activity and the use of e-learning and virtual learning environments.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a range of methods including exams, essays, portfolios and student presentations. You will be assessed by school staff and University tutors while on school placements.

MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) graduates typically go on to teach in Gaelic-medium or English-medium Primary schools. Further qualifications can be gained through part-time postgraduate study for those who wish to enhance their knowledge of teaching and learning and/or pursue leadership roles.
Standard entry requirement
The standard entry requirement is:
- SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S5. If you haven’t achieved this by the end of S5 we may consider your application based on a strong performance in S6. A minimum of BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
- A Levels: ABB.
- IB: 34 points (grades 655 at HL).
Minimum entry requirement
The minimum entry requirement for widening access applicants is:
- SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S6, with a minimum of BBB achieved in one year of S4-S6.
- A Levels: ABB.
- IB: 34 points (grades 655 at HL).
The grades used to meet our entry requirements must include:
- SQA: Higher: English at grade B. National 5: a language other than English at grade B and Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics at grade B. For alternative acceptable Mathematics qualifications please contact the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Admissions Office. - A Levels: no specific A Level subjects required. GCSEs: a language other than English at grade B or 6, Mathematics at grade B or 6, English Language and English Literature, both at grade C or 4. (Revised 19/3/2019 to provide more accurate information).
- IB: HL: English at grade 5. SL: Mathematics at grade 5 and a language other than English at grade 5. SL Mathematical Studies is not accepted for this programme.
It is important that applicants for teacher education programmes show commitment, motivation and suitability for their programme and the profession.
This can be demonstrated in your personal statement by reflecting on relevant work experience, and explaining your understanding of the teacher's role.

Please note that for degrees that have a subject requirement of a language other than English, students may not use their own native language to meet this requirement. In these instances, English or an alternative language other than native will be acceptable.

SQA, GCSE and IB
For SQA, GCSE and IB students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

IB Standard Level Grade 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry)
English language tests
We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:
IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
TOEFL-iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
PTE Academic: Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section
Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components
We also accept a wider range of international qualifications and tests.
English language qualifications must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Trinity ISE, in which case it must be no more than two years old.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups
