General guidance on cancer

General information

Research suggests that around half of all cancers diagnosed in the UK could be prevented by changes to lifestyle. Cancer Research UK's Reduce the Risk campaign highlights five important ways you can lower your cancer risk.

  1. Stop smoking - it's the best present you'll ever give yourself
  2. Stay in shape - be active and keep a healthy body weight
  3. Eat and drink healthily - limit alcohol and choose a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
  4. Be SunSmart - protect yourself in the sun and take care not to burn
  5. Look after number one - know your body and see your doctor about anything unusual We can all do something to improve our lifestyle and reduce our risk of cancer

Cancer Research UK are encouraging people to 'take five' minutes to find out how to live more healthily and reduce their risk of cancer.

Cancer In the Workplace

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched a resource for employers in the form of a booklet and DVD entitled 'Cancer In the Workplace' which offers a useful tool for all, including managers or colleagues of those with cancer.

The scenarios in the 'Cancer In the Workplace' DVD are drama reconstructions of the way people or employers might, or conversely might not, deal with issues relating to cancer in the workplace. The scenarios are followed by interviews with people who have been affected by or work with cancer in the workplace. The booklet is a useful resource containing practical advice and contacts.

The ‘Cancer In the Workplace’ videos are available to view on the Macmillan website.

The Macmillan Cancer Support website has a dedicated section on 'Work and Cancer' where guidance documents can be read and/or downloaded and the ‘Cancer In the Workplace’ videos are available to view online.
