Diwali celebrations

Diwali celebrations at Moray House brought students and staff together to celebrate the festival of light.

Anish and Ihayami dancers and EDI colleagues, Pauline and Anna

Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and the start of new beginnings for millions of people of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths.

Anish Subramaniam, a current University of Edinburgh medical student and member of the University of Edinburgh Hindu Society, gave an insightful talk, informing us about the celebrations. The Edinburgh Hindu Society organises events and activities throughout the year, creating an inclusive community at the University.

After Anish’s talk and prayer, performers from the dance company, Ihayami, performed a traditional dance for event attendees. Ihayami, based in Edinburgh, is Scotland's Indian dance company specialising in traditional Indian dance.

Vishal Nambisan, an MSc Education (Research) student at Moray House said,

I extend my sincere gratitude for the Diwali celebrations organised at Thomson's Hall. It was really heart-warming to listen to the speech on the festival of Diwali, beautiful dance recital and, of course, the sweets! Not to miss on the chance of getting to meet you and several others. The event made my day a memorable one.

This beautiful event was organised by the equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) events committee and led by members Pauline Patel and Anna Koryczan. EDI organises various events and activities throughout the year, celebrating the diverse School community at Moray House.
