Your Programme Induction
MSc Education Programme-wide Welcome Session (All Pathways)
Monday 11 September, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location: Paterson's Land, G1 (find Paterson's Land on campus maps). This session will take place on campus.
This is a programme-wide induction session. All students in MSc Education (including all pathways) should attend. In this session, you will meet with the programme team and hear about the programme structure, Teaching and Learning in Semester One, and other important information that will help you succeed in your master’s study.
MSc Education Pathway-specific Welcome Sessions
Please attend the session according to your pathway. In these sessions, you will hear more about pathway-specific arrangements for the academic year. If your offer shows ‘MSc Education’, you should attend the ‘General Pathway’ session. All sessions will take place on campus.

The semester opens with Welcome Week, the week before the first week of teaching. Welcome Week is a key part of the postgraduate experience and participation is essential. It is an information-packed week with social and instructive activities planned by the School and the University.

Academic Year 2023/24
Semester 1 Teaching
18 September 2023 to 22 December 2023
Important:
Students must be fully matriculated to start their programme on 19 September. If you are not fully matriculated by this point, you may lose your place on your programme.
- Semester 1 is very demanding. Full-time students usually take 60 credits, equivalent to 600 hours of student effort. Students will complete various forms of assessments including individual tasks and group work.
- Students are expected to attend all classes and registers will be taken at tutorials, seminars and workshops. If you are unable to attend a tutorial, seminar or workshop due to illness or for any other reason, you must email the tutor or lecturer in advance to explain why you will be absent.
- Teaching ends on 1 December 2023 and the time remaining until the end of the semester is used to complete assignments and take exams. Students will be advised of assignment deadlines by course organisers.
- If you are studying here on a Tier 4 visa, and move to Edinburgh, you must let us know in advance if you are going to be travelling away from Edinburgh for more than 5 days. Typically, students must stay in Edinburgh for the duration of their studies and you should advise staff if you wish to leave the country at any point.
Winter holidays
22 December 2023 to 12 January 2024
If you are studying here on a Tier 4 visa, and move to Edinburgh, you must let us know in advance if you are going to be travelling away from Edinburgh for more than 5 days.
The University campus is typically closed for some period of time during the Winter holidays and staff and students will not be able to access campus facilities. The University is currently scheduled to be closed 22 December 2023 to 2 January 2024, reopening at 9am on 3 January 2024, albeit these dates are indicative only.
Semester 2 Teaching
15 January 2024 to 27 May 2024
- Semester 2 is very demanding, especially as most students will spend time preparing for their Master's dissertation in Semester 2.
- Students are expected to attend all classes and registers will be taken at tutorials, seminars and workshops. If you are unable to attend a tutorial, seminar or workshop due to illness or for any other reason, you must email the tutor or lecturer in advance to explain why you will be absent.
- Teaching ends on 5 April 2024, and the time remaining until the end of the semester is used to complete assignments and take exams. Students will be advised of assignment deadlines by course organisers.

Dissertation (or equivalent Masters-level project) preparation and writing
April 2024 to August 2024*
Programme Directors will advise students of the submission date for their dissertation.
*Full-time students on the 21-month programme MSc Transformative Learning and Teaching will submit in June 2025.
*Full-time students on the 15-month programmes MSc Outdoor Education and MSc Outdoor Environmental & Sustainability Education will submit in November 2024.
Winter graduation
To be confirmed - typically November 2024
- Graduations are arranged by Student Administration.
- The majority of Master's students will graduate in the Winter Graduation, with some exceptions: MSc Transformative Learning and Teaching, MSc Outdoor Education and MSc Outdoor Environmental & Sustainability Education students would typically graduate in the Summer Graduations held in July 2025; part-time students, those studying for a Postgraduate Research degree (PhD), or for a PG Certificate or Diploma may also graduate in the Summer Graduation depending on the timing of completion of their studies.
