This website is run by Development and Alumni at The University of Edinburgh. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change most of the colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • it is not possible to navigate throughout the whole site using a keyboard only in certain browsers ( drop downs do not work in Firefox)
  • there are unlabeled links and dropdown menus which can make the use of assistive technology difficult such as Screen readers and voice recognition software
  • magnification may lead to issues accessing all content on the screen as some of it is obscured by the privacy notice;
  • there are colour contrasts that do not meet recommended contrast levels
  • keyboard navigation could be clearer in informing users where they have reached on a page;
  • some free text boxes do not give error messages that indicate what is required
  • Some parts of the website are not fully compatible with mobile accessibility functionality.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Noncompliance with the accessibility regulations

The following items to not comply with the WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria:

Some colour contrasts do not meet the recommended contrast ratio

Site is not fully compatible with browser customisation meaning that users do not have full control and functionality when customising the site

Not all content can be reached by keyboard use only

It is not always clear to tell where the user has navigated to or reached when using the keyboard

Users are not alerted when clicking on a link will activate a pop up window

When a user is asked to rectify a data validation error, suggestions are not always consistent

Some items are not labelled correctly affecting compatibility with assistive technology e.g. screen readers

Unless specified otherwise, a complete solution, or significant improvement, will be in place for those items within our control by December 2022.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix.

We are not currently claiming that there is any content outwith the scope of the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We will continue to address the accessibility issues highlighted, either through delivery of a solution or suitable workaround. Unless specified otherwise, changes will be made through continuous improvement work to the EdGel framework and during any enhancements to the donation portal.

Whilst we are in the process of resolving these accessibility issues, or where we are unable, we will ensure reasonable adjustments are in place to make sure no user is disadvantaged. As changes are made, we will continue to review accessibility and retest the accessibility of this website.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 27th May 2022. It was last reviewed on 2nd June 2022

This website was tested by the ISG Disability Information team May 2022, using the Internet Explorer (19041.1052), Mozilla Firefox (78.11.0esr), Microsoft Edge (91.0.864.59) and Google Chrome (91.0.4471.124) browsers. Internet Explorer is still commonly used by disabled people, due to its accessibility features and compatibility with assistive technology, as shown in a UK government survey:

However, a more recent world-wide usage level survey suggests the other browsers are used more widely. In particular, when using a combination of different screen readers and browsers, Chrome has increased in popularity, and is now the favoured one in overall use:

We tested:

  • Spellcheck functionality;
  • Scaling using different resolutions and reflow;
  • Options to customise the interface (magnification, font, background colour et. cetera);
  • Keyboard navigation and keyboard traps;
  • Data validation;
  • Warning of links opening in a new tab or window;
  • Information conveyed in colour or sound only;
  • Flashing, moving or scrolling text;
  • Operability if JavaScript is disabled;
  • Use with screen reading software (for example, JAWS);
  • Assistive software (TextHelp Read and Write, Windows Magnifer, ZoomText, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, TalkBack and VoiceOver);
  • Tooltips and text alternatives for any non-text content;
  • Time limits;
  • Compatibility with mobile accessibility functionality (Android and iOS).
