Careers in Tech & Data (6-24 February)
What is the #EdTechDataCareers campaign?
As one of the biggest areas of growth we want to encourage students from all degree disciplines to consider the range of options a Tech & Data career can offer; inspiration for our Informatics students at the top end of the technical skills spectrum, options for students from other STEM subjects with solid relevant skills, and advice for non-STEM students with a developing interest and the capacity to learn.
#EdTechDataCareers is designed to help you raise your profile and promote your graduate positions, internships and other paid opportunities that can come under the “Tech & Data Careers” banner.

How do I get involved?

*We do not want price to be a barrier, please get in touch if this price is prohibitive for you
Why should you book?
-
To benefit from the footfall a high profile, multi-employer on campus event will generate
-
Opportunity to inspire and access a hard-to-reach audience: non-technical students interested in tech and data roles
-
Help you widen your pool of potential candidates for all kinds of opportunities from part-time work to internships to graduate roles
-
Ideal for companies seeking both candidates with a degree specifically relevant to Tech/Data and for those who are open to either students from any STEM subject or students from any discipline.
In addition to attending Careers in Tech & Data Fair on Wednesday 15th February, you can also nominate a speaker for “Women in Tech and Data” networking event (on campus) on Tuesday 14th February 1-2pm.
Aim: Help inspire our female students and expose them to positive role models working in tech/data. We want to encourage relaxed, informal conversations that allow students to make useful connections, find out what careers are open to them and get ideas on how to improve their chances of success.
This event will be run in collaboration with Hoppers, the official society for women, non-binary and transgender people in the School of Informatics and Women in STEM (EUWiSTEM) which aims to promote, support and connect women in STEM across the university.
Format: The event will begin with an introduction from Careers Service staff followed by very brief intros from each of the 4-6 organisations in attendance. These representatives will then spread around the room, and students will be encouraged to circulate to talk to them to find out more. The event will not be set up like a fair - students and employers will be free to move around the venue to interact with each other.
Cost: There is no charge for organisations to participate
Date & Time: Tuesday 14th February 1-2pm
Venue: Careers Service Kings Building campus, Nucleus building

Around the time of the fair, we plan to shine a spotlight on the huge range of tech and data roles you are looking to fill; from Cyber Security Analysts or Machine Learning Engineers, where you might be looking for quite specific skills, through to Data Analysts, Digital Marketing Officers or Web Designers where you might welcome applications from a wider range of students and graduates.
We want to showcase the variety of sectors and organisations that can come under the “Tech & Data Careers” banner i.e. can include technical roles in an organisation whose core business is not technology-specific and could include roles in ‘Tech companies” that are not strictly technical roles.
During the campaign period we'll be encouraging students to search for content on socials, plus vacancies and events on MyCareerHub using #EdTechDataCareers. To make the most of this:
-
Ensure that you've uploaded any relevant opportunities to MyCareerHub and added #EdTechDataCareers as part of your vacancy and event description so that it will appear in students' search results.
-
Use the hashtag on your own social media posts to help University of Edinburgh students engaging with the campaign to find you e.g. Tag us in any short videos you have (30 secs or so) so we can share on our socials
A great way to provide some content for the campaign is to write a guest piece for our Inform.ed Blog. This might be a good option if you are interested in being part of the campaign but aren't able to participate in one of our events.
We'd be looking for someone from your organisation to write something that gives our readers an insight into their career path, sector or type of role. E.g.
-
Keen to hear from someone who is applying their tech/data skills outside the tech sector e.g. Advertising/Marketing and HR/People Analytics https://www.aihr.com/blog/5-big-data-trends-and-what-they-mean-for-hr/
-
An insight from a recent graduate from Science, Engineering or Maths background who can demonstrate how their analytical skills are valued in tech/data.
Take a look at our blog to get a feel for the content we publish and let us know what you'd like to write about.
Send your blog post idea to employers@ed.ac.uk
Which students will engage with this campaign?
The campaign will be promoted to students from all subject areas and all year groups but would expect most interest to come from Undergraduates in years 2-4/5 and post-graduate taught students. Would expect about 60% interest from students in our College of Science & Engineering (includes Informatics) and 40% non-STEM from our College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. We hope the “Women in Tech & Data” in person networking session will attract at least 20 students and the on-campus Careers Fair at least 500 students. Further engagement will come from students searching #EdTechDataCareers on MyCareerHub and socials, including our Blog.
