Undergraduates and summer students
Thinking about a career in cancer research?
If you want to come and visit our laboratories, we open our doors monthly for laboratory tours. You will have the opportunity to meet our researchers and ask questions. Booking on these tours is essential, for more details please see our events listing.
We do not run a designated summer scholarship programme, however if you are a penultimate or final year undergraduate and there is a particular researcher you are interested in working with this need not deter you.
Here is a simple "how to" guide:
Consider whether you are eligible to apply/receive supporting funding to cover bench fees and consumables.
Decide which research group you would like to join. We recommend you research their work and are well prepared before you contact them.
Send an email, directly to the Group Leader, with a two-page CV (including any examinations marks already received and the contact details of two referees)
If they have the space in their laboratory, they may consider supporting your summer internship in their laboratory.
Funding options for summer internships
- Bursaries from the Medical Research Council, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council
- Cancer Research UK summer placement schemes from the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute
- International Exchange Erasmus Student Network
