Essential health and safety information for all building users.
Fire Safety
The fire alarm is an audio as well as visual alarm. In the event of a fire, a loud siren will be activated as well as flashing fire alarm points in the roof throughout the building. Follow the fire signs to the nearest fire escape, bearing in mind the nearest exit might not be the one you came in. Make your way to the fire assembly point that is located on Potterow at its junction with Marshall Lane. Please take note of the nearest exit when working in the building.
All building users should ensure that you read and understand the building Fire Action Plan
Fire Stewards and Fire Coordinators should be present in the building Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm but should there be no fire stewards available on site then you should call University Security on 0131 650 2257 to confirm when it is safe to return to the building.
In the event of a fire alarm, lifts should not be used. There are fire refuge points on every floor for anyone who is unable to use the stairs in an evacuation. Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm the intercom in the refuge points can be used to summon assistance. Outside of these times, you should call University Security on 0131 650 2222. University Security will then assist you in your evacuation. Please ensure you are aware of the location of the refuge points if these will be needed.

Fire Alarm Testing
A fire alarm test takes place every Thursday at 11.30am. During the test, there is no requirement to exit the building. A fire drill will take place at least one a year and building users are expected to exit the building as it if were a real fire. This an essential requirement designed to test and review the systems in place.
Staff, students, visitors and event attendees who may require assistance during an evacuation
Individuals who would need assistance to evacuate may require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). First Aid
First Aid kits are available on each level, outside the kitchen, placed on the wall beside the sitting area. Please report any injuries or incidents to bayes.reception@ed.ac.uk. There is a defibrillator and a first aid kit available at reception. There are first aid trained members of staff available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and contact reception if they are needed.
Building users should ensure they work in a safe manner for the safety of themselves and others. If anyone is found to be working in unsafe manner, they will be asked to leave the building. Building users can seek support by emailing bayes.reception@ed.ac.uk
