Why did you choose the University of Edinburgh?

My experience during my undergrad spending a semester at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia was the best 6 months of my life.  It also motivated me to look at universities overseas with a strong reputation and international profile.  After taking a trip to the UK to short-listed schools, I was wowed by the University of Edinburgh program and only applied here for MBAs.

I loved my time in Edinburgh for so many reasons.  The beauty of the city and the Scottish culture will always have a place in my heart.  My favorite memory was probably the first ceilidh we had and all the stares I was getting on the street walking over to it, probably because it was the first time I was wearing a kilt.  Well, as it turned out, the reason I was getting so many stares was because I was wearing it backwards!  After a quick change, the rest of the ceilidh was a blast with haggis, whisky and dancing.

After leaving Edinburgh, I settled in South Florida where the real estate market is vibrant.  I have invested in several properties here and also operate a real estate brokerage, JF Residential LLC, where I represent buyers and sellers in their real estate acquisitions, and also manage and develop a team of 17 salespeople ranging from ex-IT professionals to former NFL players.

The beauty of the city and the Scottish culture will always have a place in my heart.

Alumni wisdom

Invest in a jacket and watch Braveheart to start getting a feel for (fake) Scottish accents, the history of William Wallace, who you will probably see on the Royal Mile, and of course “freedom!”  Come in with an open mind and do everything you can to immerse yourself in the culture and studies.  My time in Scotland was such a life changing, incredible experience that I would encourage anyone to do the same.
