11 October 2016 | Alumni reception in Boston

Join us for an alumni event taking place at The Downtown Harvard Club of Boston on Tuesday 11 October.

The University of Edinburgh Alumni Club of Boston will be hosting Professor Sandy Tudhope, Head of the School of GeoSciences and Professor of Climate Studies, for a talk on ‘Climate crisis? The view from the tropical coral reef’.

Chris Cox, Vice Principal (Philanthropy & Advancement), will also be attending and will provide an update on our alumni programmes and recent developments at the University.

Climate crisis?

Tropical coral reefs are amongst the most beautiful and biologically diverse biological communities on Earth.  However, climate change poses some significant challenges for these ecosystems.  Over recent decades, overheating has resulted in mass mortality of corals, and ocean acidification poses a future ‘hidden’ threat to the ability of corals to grow.  Professor Tudhope will discuss the issues, and what we know (and don’t know) about the ability of corals to adapt to change.  He will also discuss how we can use corals to help understand the nature and drivers of tropical climate change.
