Professor Fernández-Götz awarded Royal Society of Edinburgh Thomas Reid Medal

The School was delighted to learn that Professor Manuel Fernández-Götz, Abercromby Professor of Archaeology, received the Royal Society of Edinburgh Thomas Reid Medal for his position as a leading Early Career researcher on diverse aspects of the European Iron Age.

Although announced in summer 2021, the highly prestigious medals – which recognise exceptional achievement in science, academia, and public engagement – were presented at a ceremony in Edinburgh in November 2022. Professor Fernández-Götz's contributions have provided markedly fresh thinking in impressive monographs, edited collections, and papers in highly regarded journals.

Professor Manuel Fernández-Götz said, “I am truly honoured to have been awarded the RSE Thomas Reid Medal. As an archaeologist, I believe that looking at the past can help us to gain a better understanding of many key topics that continue to shape our present world. I am very grateful to the committee for this recognition, and to all my colleagues for their support”.

Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, former President (interim) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, said: “The Royal Society of Edinburgh’s medals recognise researchers and academics whose discoveries have helped us understand and change our perception of the world. Through a mixture of curiosity, determination and brilliance, their work not only makes a difference to society but also continues to put research carried out in this country on the world map.
