Senior Lecturer in Classics and Director of Teaching in Classics, Dr Calum Maciver will begin his one-year Leverhulme Research Fellowship in September. He will be working on the project 'The Poetics of Imperial Greek Epic: Innovation and Tradition’ which articulates the first unified account of the shared poetics of the Greek epics of the 3rd-6th centuries CE. The monograph will show that these Late Antique poems, especially Nonnus' Dionysiaca, the largest epic of antiquity, and its successors, appropriate the previous (3rd-century BCE), influential Hellenistic models, so dominant in Latin receptions of Greek poetics, both to assert their own literary sophistication, but also to highlight their difference as something entirely new. By means of a series of interrelated case studies, The Poetics offers the first compendious study of tradition and innovation in these works.

Dr Maciver said, "I’m absolutely delighted to get the chance to have some uninterrupted time to complete my next book, and to make further strides in my research on Late Antique Greek poetry."

The School sends warmest congratulations to Calum and looks forward to the publication of his book.
