Writing exercises

With an interest in writing sparked at school and developed at university, Melissa Steel now works as the Communications & Marketing Officer at Sport & Exercise.

My background

I have always had an interest in writing, from the first story I penned in primary school about my rabbit going to Mars (I had a fertile imagination), via winning the Herald’s Best Student Features Writer award during my time at the University of St Andrews and studying for a Masters in Journalism at Napier, to my current job as a Communications & Marketing Officer at Sport & Exercise.

Stories about intrepid rabbits feature a lot less these days but I’m very fortunate to have a job where I get to write all the time!

At Edinburgh

If you follow Sport & Exercise on social media, have seen our advertising or signed up for a membership, there is a good chance you have read something I have written or at least proof read!

We run or are involved in a diverse range of events and activities, everything from a weekly roster of 100+ fitness classes to the Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish Varsity Matches at BT Murrayfield, regularly attended by over 10,000 people. All these projects need to be promoted through a variety of channels, including digital media, print and in person and that’s where I come in, alongside the rest of our Marketing Team.

Did you know that about 30 students and staff are heading to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games this year? In particular, we have an impressively large contingent of swimmers going, so keep your eye out for the likes of Kat Greenslade and Corrie Scott in the pool.

Something I know...

We are not just a gym – even if it is a world-class one! There are many strands to Sport & Exercise’s offer, including an elite Performance Sport Programme which supports our talented student athletes.

Sport & Exercise also helps those just wanting to get a bit more active, a bit more often through our Support for Physical Activity (SPA) Programme, a free service for staff and students involving one-on-one consultations to guide you through the process of embracing a more active lifestyle.

Sport & Exercise is truly open to everybody and we hope to see you in one of our facilities soon!
