Beyond coding - Working with MAXQDA tools to enhance qualitative analysis
Qualitative Data Analysis Software has moved a long way beyond its original ‘code and retrieve’ functionality but this can result in a confusing plethora of tools whose purpose and functionality are unclear. This workshop will look at a selection of possibilities in MAXQDA that should help in the phase of ‘breaking out’ after initial coding work has been done. The emphasis will be on qualitative analysis tools (rather than mixed methods or quantitising functions), in particular using writing spaces, colour to assist pattern seeking, tools for summarising coded themes, and visual tools such as document portraits and mind-mapping screens.
The workshop will mainly use demonstrations of the items being discussed, but if participants wish to bring a working copy of the MAXQDA 2018 program on a laptop with some of their own coded data there will be opportunities to explore these functions on that (subject to time constraints). However, the presentation should also be accessible to researchers who do not currently use MAXQDA but who would like to see some of the potential assistance that computers can provide in the qualitative field.

Introducing Qualitative Analysis with Quirkos
Quirkos is a simple, visual tool to help with the analysis of qualitative text data. It aims to keep researchers close to their data with it's unique interface where your themes are represented by growing bubbles. Quirkos is also easy to learn, with just the tools you need for qualitative analysis and nothing extra. After this workshop you will should be comfortable using Quirkos independently, we will cover all the major features including bringing in your text data, creating themes and coding to them, exploring coded data and generating exports. Either bring a laptop (Windows, Mac or Linux), or follow along with the presentation and handouts. We will provide a one-month free trial of Quirkos, and example data sets unless you want to use your own. Ask questions to the founder and designer of Quirkos, Dr Daniel Turner.

Getting the most out of the ECQI conference using NVivo and Evernote
Silvana di Gregorio, PhD – Research Director, QSR International
Have you looked at the ECQI conference abstracts yet? Are you excited by all the possible sessions you can attend but a bit overwhelmed on how to choose what you want to see? Let NVivo help you navigate the conference programme. In this session, you will download the conference abstracts and import them into NVivo. You will be shown how to use NVivo’s tools to find the sessions that are most relevant to your interests and plan your own personal programme. If you have the Plus edition, you can use the automatic coding by theme feature to quickly pull out the detailed issues covered by the abstracts. You will also be shown how you can take notes during the conference session in Evernote, Word or directly in NVivo and then import your notes in NVivo so NVivo can become an archive of this conference that you can continue to refer to after the conference. If you don’t have NVivo, you can download the free 14 day trial before the workshop.
