Teaching Matters

The Future Curriculum Framework

An overview of the work underway to develop the future Curriculum Framework for the University.

At the heart of the Curriculum Transformation Project is the development of a new Curriculum Framework (comprising Programme Archetypes and Curriculum Design Principles) for our Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate educational portfolio.

Programme Archetypes

The introduction of 4 Undergraduate and 3 Taught Postgraduate Programme Archetypes will provide a consistent structural template for our degree programmes to enable more effective sharing of courses and as basis for improvements to the shared supporting infrastructure for teaching.

The Undergraduate Programme Archetypes combine space to support disciplinary depth and excellence with space for learning outside the primary discipline, interdisciplinary and experiential learning to support achievement of the Edinburgh Student Vision and meet the evolving expectations and priorities of students, employers and accrediting bodies.

The Taught Postgraduate Programme Archetypes have been designed to accommodate current and future requirements for programme structures, include mode of study and flexibility, responsiveness to changes in demand and new opportunities.

Curriculum Design Principles

The Curriculum Design Principles are intended to inform and guide decisions on curriculum design, approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, and the infrastructure, systems and processes that underpin teaching.

Together the Programme Archetypes and Curriculum Design Principles provide a framework that will support consistent action in support of priority areas and themes across the whole institution.

The proposed Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Curriculum Frameworks are currently under consultation with colleagues across the University.
