Events at the Nucleus Building

The Nucleus building is a shared learning, teaching and social hub at the heart of the King’s Buildings campus. It offers a range of bookable spaces, with a variety of sizes and furniture arrangements, which can be used for teaching, events and activities.

Its primary purpose is for teaching and learning, but outside of teaching hours, use of the space is managed by the College Office in the College of Science and Engineering.

Bookable spaces

There are a variety of spaces available for bookings:

  • Alder Lecture Theatre - a 300-person bleacher-style lecture theatre with seating that can be positioned tiered or flat against the wall.
  • Elm Lecture Theatre - a 112-person collaborative lecture theatre.
  • Hawthorn - a 132-person studio classroom with six-person group teaching desks.
  • Larch Lecture Theatre - a 300-person turn-and-learn lecture theatre. Alternate rows of seats can be turned 180° to allow discussion or small working groups.
  • Oak Lecture Theatre - a 400-person fixed-seating lecture theatre primarily for high-volume classes.
  • Yew Lecture Theatre – a 150-person bleacher-style lecture theatre with seating that can be positioned tiered or flat against the wall.

Catering

All catering must be arranged by the event organiser who will order and pay for their own catering directly with the caterers. Catering should not be consumed in lecture theatres.

Responsible person

All events will have a designated responsible person. For internal events, this should be a University of Edinburgh member of staff or a student. For external events, this should be a dedicated organiser or host who will be present during the event.

The responsible person will be present throughout the event.  This person will:

  • Carry out a risk assessment, where necessary and submit it to nucleus.bookings@ed.ac.uk in advance.
  • Ensure that rooms are left clean and any furniture moved has been returned to its original place.
  • Ensure that guests leave the building at the end of the event.
  • Ensure that the event has appropriate fire warden and first aid cover.
