Register as an online student

Registration is the first step of the matriculation process. All campus-based and online distance-learning students must first register online with the University.

Registering (annual registration)

Annual Registration is the first required step to enrol as a student at the University of Edinburgh.

You cannot complete any other enrolment steps until this is done.

What you need to do now

If Annual Registration is open for you:
Complete the online registration form when you receive the email invitation.

If you have not received an email yet:
Registration has not opened for you — there is nothing you need to do at this stage.

What is annual registration?

Annual Registration is the online process where you confirm your details and your intention to study with us. It is part of the wider matriculation process.

You will be asked to:

  • Confirm personal and emergency contact details.
  • Confirm previous qualifications (new students only).
  • Accept or decline your programme place.
  • Confirm you have read and accept University regulations.

When registration opens

Annual Registration opens around four weeks before your programme start date.

Before this, you may be asked to complete additional admissions requirements (for example English language evidence or Disclosure Scotland checks).


If your School has not contacted you about this, you do not need to take any action.

How you complete annual registration

When registration opens, you will receive an email to both:

  • Your University student email address.
  • Your personal email address.

The email will contain a link to the online registration form.

You can also access it via MyEd:
Accounts → Progression → My student record

You must complete Annual Registration before you can move on to any further steps.

What happens next: Confirming your attendance

After your programme starts, you must confirm your attendance.
This step varies by School and programme.

Your School will contact you with instructions. This may involve:

  • Accessing your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), or emailing your Programme Team.

You are not fully matriculated until your attendance is confirmed.
