Edinburgh Impact: Harnessing time and tide

FASTBLADE - Test centre to bring tidal technology stream
FASTBLADE will employ data-driven techniques to enhance our knowledge of tidal energy production.

Tidal power has a significant role to play in the future of renewable energy generation and the achievment of climate change goals and objectives, but further knowledge is required to enhance the efficiency of turbine design.

Edinburgh researchers are actively researching tidal power and an innovative new test facility named FASTBLADE has been created to apply a data driven approach  to test tidal technology and enhance our knowledge of turbine blade efficiency.

This Edinburgh Impact article outlines the importance of tidal energy and subsequent tidal research, and highlights the ambitious goals and plans of FASTBLADE.

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Ocean Decade) officially launched in January 2021 and will continue until 2030. The UN Ocean Decade is a call to action for scientists and researchers to come together to generate the science we need in order to achieve the ocean we want.

The University of Edinburgh has risen to this challenge by becoming an official partner of the UN Ocean Decade.

To celebrate the launch of the Ocean Decade, University of Edinburgh researchers wrote an open-access article for ECO Magazine:
