Eligibility criteria

If you are interested in tutoring for the School of Health in Social Science, please see the information below on how to apply and what positions are available. Before you apply, keep the following in mind.

  • Tutors must be based in Edinburgh or able to commute to Edinburgh as there may be live teaching events or in-person campus based teaching. If you are based outside of the UK, you cannot take on any work or be considered for tutoring. 
  • Tutoring posts are student development opportunities, and priority will be given to our current PhD students.
  • The maximum number of weekly hours any tutor who is currently studying full-time for a PhD should undertake is an average of 9 hours per week. Further restrictions may apply if you are a student visa holder. Further information on the average 9 hours per week limit for PhD students
  • Tutors must be available for all tutoring sessions, and during the marking period (if relevant), and discuss any non-availability with the course organiser before accepting the tutoring opportunity.
  • Professional doctorate students must be in year 3 and above (full-time) and year 5 and above (part-time) to apply.

  • Tutors may be required by the course organiser to attend core lectures to develop their understanding of the course material to better facilitate tutorials. Tutors may also be required to attend School or IAD training around assessment and feedback depending on their level of experience.
