Support for students affected by gender-based violence

During this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the University is highlighting support available to students affected by gender-based violence.

The annual global campaign runs from 25 November until 10 December.

Support at the University of Edinburgh

Equally Safe Team

Gender-based violence can affect anyone. It can happen in relationships, at home, in public or online. The Equally Safe Team is a dedicated support service for students affected by gender-based abuse and violence.

The best way to contact the Equally Safe Team is by using the Report + Support online platform. You don’t have to be certain that what happened was gender-based violence. If something did not feel right, the team are here to listen and support you.

Students and staff can use the platform to report any form of bullying, harassment, discrimination or gender-based violence. There is an option to report anonymously or with contact details to get support.

Advice Place

The Students' Association's Advice Place is a professional, independent and confidential advisory service. They can offer information on a wide range of issues, including gender-based violence, to all survivors.

Dignity and Respect

Gender-based violence has no place at the University of Edinburgh. We are all part of a community that values kindness, fairness and respect. The University’s Dignity and Respect Policy sets out what that means in practice and reminds us that everyone deserves to feel safe and supported.

Taking action against gender-based violence together

Students and staff at Edinburgh have worked together to co-create preventative measures addressing gender-based violence on campus.

This has included online consent training being embedded in matriculation, workshops for student leaders in sports, societies and accommodation, as well as resources for staff supporting students.

Student society leaders work closely with University’s student services, such as the Equally Safe team and Conduct team to strengthen our support systems, and students’ feedback has been vital to shape these services.

Student societies also collaborate with each other to run consent awareness campaigns and workshops, alongside learning and solidarity events for the student community.

Events and resources

Visit the Students’ Association website to find details about events taking place on campus to mark 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The Students’ Association will also be marking the campaign across their social media channels.

This year, the United Nation’s theme for 16 Days of Activism is ‘UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls’. The University’s Digital Skills Team has compiled a list of resources focusing on raising awareness of digital gender-based violence.
