Celebrating our students’ sporting achievements

Blues and Colours Awards and the University’s Sports Hall of Fame showcase some of the outstanding sporting and volunteering achievements of our current and former students.

Blues and Colours Awards 2023

The annual Blues and Colours Awards took place on Friday 2 June.

The prestigious and highly coveted Blues Awards are awarded by the Sports Union to the University’s top athletes and students who have performed to a consistently high level for their University club. Full Blues are awarded for national standard representation and Half Blues for sub-national standard representation.

The Colours recognise Edinburgh students who have gone above and beyond to support their chosen sport and clubs. University sport clubs could not operate without these volunteers’ tremendous commitment and contributions.

This year 119 Colours, Half Blues and Blues were awarded, along with seven special awards to recognise exceptional sporting performance.

2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the first Blues being awarded. To celebrate this, a new Blues and Colours Gallery will open in the Pleasance Sports Hall this summer.

Sports Hall of Fame

Also on Friday 2 June, a further three remarkable athletes were inducted into the University’s Sports Hall of Fame. Over the years, individuals from the world of sport at the University of Edinburgh have contributed a huge amount on the international stage, and our Hall of Fame recognises that. Edinburgh’s Sports Hall of Fame now boasts 48 world-class athletes across 20 sports.

This year the University inducted the following trio of sporting icons:

  • One of Great Britain’s most decorated divers, Grace Reid (Edinburgh student, Olympian, two-time European and Commonwealth Games Champion)
  • Six-time British Champion, judoka Sarah Adlington (Edinburgh alumni, Olympian, two-time Commonwealth Games Champion)
  • Britain’s most successful ever female rifle shooter, Seonaid McIntosh (Edinburgh alumni, Olympian, two-time Commonwealth Champion, world record holder).
