‘Being an active bystander’ online event

We are hosting a bystander intervention session to encourage our University community to challenge inappropriate behaviours.

This online session will promote discussions around a range of difficult situations – including sexual violence, harassment and abuse – that may occur within a student setting.

The event will take place on Wednesday 12 May, 5:30pm - 7:00pm BST.

It is open to all matriculated University of Edinburgh Students. Sign up using the link below:

Challenging behaviours

In our University lives, we may sometimes witness attitudes or behaviours that go against our personal, community or University values or which directly impact upon us as forms of abuse or harassment.

While many of us would like to involve ourselves and help those in crisis, we might not know how to intervene, or we may be afraid to speak out against bullying and abusive attitudes.

The ‘Being an active bystander’ event course will:

  • Look at the concept of a ‘Bystander’ and why we might not know if or how to intervene
  • Promote discussions on a range of social situations that may occur within a student setting
  • Look at ways we can identify unacceptable behaviour
  • Provide attendees with effective interventions and strategies that you can use to both support, signpost and safely challenge those in difficult situations

Supporting survivors of sexual violence

The University offers a wide range of support for survivors of sexual violence and gender-based violence.

Over the past year, we have invested in key initiatives to improve our support for survivors of sexual violence.

In 2020, we appointed a Sexual Violence and Harassment Liaison manager who is our community’s first point of call to support those who have experienced sexual violence, gender based violence, domestic abuse or harassment.

We recently launched a ‘Report + Support’ system which will allow students and staff to report their experiences to the University anonymously and to access services in a more streamlined way.

You can access all of the support available to you using the link below:
