Rugby success for Edinburgh at Twickenham
The University’s Ladies Rugby Club has triumphed in the final of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship.
Edinburgh defeated Northumbria 48–5 in the final, played in the auspicious surroundings of Twickenham, the home of English rugby.
The team are the first Scottish club to reach the final in 19 years, and repeated the success of the EULRFC class of 1998.
The road to glory
The British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship is the most prestigious competition in student rugby.
The top eight women's teams in the country entered the tournament.
Having beaten the University of Bristol and Durham University on the way to the final the team were well prepared for the challenge ahead.
The team
The team featured five Scottish Internationals: Sarah Law , Rhona Lloyd, Lisa Thomson, Katie Dougan and Megan Gaffney, all of whom played in the recent 6 Nations tournament, and England Under-20 International Sally Stott.
Captain Sarah Law and Number 13 Megan Gaffney both registered a hat-trick of tries in the momentous win at Twickenham.
It's been a fantastic season and to win the BUCS championship is amazing. The whole team have worked so hard for this moment and did everything we could to bring the cup home with us.
A season of success
A fantastic season has already seen the team win their league championship – the BUCS Premier North League.
The Ladies also came out victorious in the Scottish Varsity match against St Andrews and reached the semi-final of the Sarah Beaney Scottish Cup.
We're absolutely delighted to win the BUCS Championship. The attitude of the players all season has been phenomenal. They've worked so hard for this and deserve this moment that they will never forget.
