2019/20 national pay uplift

An update on this year’s pay negotiations.

Each year the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA) negotiates the national pay increase on behalf of all participating universities across the UK.

This negotiation is carried out through the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES) made up of UCEA and the five Higher Education trade unions (EIS, GMB, UCU, UNISON and Unite). These pay negotiations determine the basic increase on the values of the 51 spine points on the national pay scale.

In April 2019, UCEA made a best and final offer of 1.8% on spine points 17-51, with higher increases on the lower spine points, worth up to 3.65%. You can find out more about the individual spine point increases on our website:

2019 spine point increases

UCEA has advised that, although the unions have rejected the final offer, employers should implement the pay award now and so enable employees to benefit from an increase in their pay sooner rather than later.

Therefore, in common with many other universities, we will be processing the pay increase, including back pay to 1st August 2019, in the September 2019 payroll.

The 1.8% pay award will also be applied to points above spine point 51, non-apprentice trade rates of pay and to the XM, RCB and ECA legacy scales.

Further information on the Pay Negotiations can be found on the UCEA Website. Should you have any immediate queries please email humanresources@ed.ac.uk.
