Senior staff in Queen's Birthday Honours
Five members of staff have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Senior Vice-Principal Professor Charlie Jeffery has been made a CBE, Principal of New College Professor David Fergusson has been awarded an OBE, Professor of Nursing Education Pam Smith and University Organist Dr John Kitchen have been given MBEs, and BioQuarter Campus Operations Manager Dr Sharon Hannah has been given a BEM.
The awards have been given as part of the celebrations marking the Queen's 90th birthday.
Professor Charlie Jeffery CBE
Charlie Jeffery is a Professor of Politics and was appointed Senior Vice-Principal of the University in 2014. He previously served as Vice-Principal for Public Policy, as Director of the Academy of Government, and as Head of the School of Social and Political Science.
He has been given a CBE for services to social science.
I am delighted to be singled out for this honour. I have always seen academic work as a collective effort and I've been fortunate to work with many colleagues who have helped to give our work as social scientists impact beyond higher education. This has especially been the case in the initiatives I was fortunate to lead on. During the Scottish referendum debate we managed to work closely with both sides in the debate, but also stand above the fray and offer impartial analysis that was widely used by the general public. It shows how important it is for social scientists to open up their expertise in ways which engage the general public, helping ordinary people make sense of major political decisions and to decipher and challenge the claims made in politics.
Professor David Fergusson OBE
David Fergusson is a Professor of Divinity and worked for several years as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland. He is the Principal of the School of Divinity.
Having held the Chair of Systematic Theology in the University of Aberdeen, he returned to Edinburgh as Professor of Divinity in 2000. He is a Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland.
He has been recognised with an OBE for services to education, the arts, and the Church of Scotland.
I'm delighted to be honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours. My involvement in the wider sphere of university and church has been an important part of my work at New College over many years. I am greatly indebted to many colleagues who have offered their support and friendship along the way.
Professor Pam Smith MBE
Pam Smith is Professor of Nursing Education in the School of of Health and Social Science.
Prof Smith was appointed Professorial Fellow in Nursing Studies in 2012, and was head of Nursing Studies between 2010 and 2013.
She has been awarded an MBE for services to nursing and nurse education.
Dr John Kitchen MBE
John Kitchen was Senior Lecturer in Music at the University for 27 years, before retiring in August 2014. He continues as University Organist and as Director of the Edinburgh University Singers.
Dr Kitchen is also involved with the early keyboard instruments at St Cecilia's Hall and is the Edinburgh City Organist with duties at the Usher Hall.
He has been awarded an MBE for services to music.
Dr Sharon Hannah BEM
Sharon Hannah is the BioQuarter Campus Operations Manager, with overall managerial responsibility for infrastructure at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine facilities at Little France.
She has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to medical research.
