The University’s summer 2022 graduation ceremonies will take place in McEwan Hall between Monday 4 July and Saturday 16 July.

Honorary graduates
Alongside School ceremonies, people are being honoured for their hard work, public service, and support for others.
Distinguished contributions to a wide range of activities, including global health, education, homelessness, nursing, medical research and philanthropy are being celebrated with the award of honorary degrees.
This includes Dame Professor Anne Marie Rafferty, DBE, President of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN); Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former executive director at UN Women; Dr Ghebreyesus, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General; and Sister Aelred, Director of the Sisters of Mercy Homeless Project.

WHO Director-General
Among those receiving honorary degrees this year is Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
He will receive a doctor honoris causa as part of the graduation for those in Health in Social Science.
Dr Tedros is the first person from WHO African Region to head the world’s leading public health agency and was elected on 1 July 2017. He was re-elected to a second term in May 2022 during the Seventy-Fifth World Health Assembly.
Dr Tedros has held many leadership positions in global health, including Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Chair of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, and Co-chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Board.
He has also served in Ethiopia’s federal government for over a decade as Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Tackling homelessness
Sister Aelred Timmins is a religious sister of Mercy of the union of Great Britain. She will receive a doctor honoris causa as part of the ceremony for students in History Classics and Architecture on Monday 11 July.
Sister Aelred is the Director of the Sisters of Mercy Homeless Project at St Catharine’s Convent in Edinburgh.
Founded in 1992, St Catharine’s Convent Homeless Project welcomes up to 200 people a day, providing practical support for disadvantaged and homeless people.
Around 100 volunteers – including local secondary schools, colleges and universities – help to staff the project.
