Research environment

The Institute of Genetics and Cancer (formerly the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine) consists of three leading research centres: MRC Human Genetics Unit, the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine and the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre. All centres have complementary expertise across multiple disciplines making this a dynamic and vibrant place to address some of the most important research questions in basic and clinical biomedical research. As well as delivering outstanding research, the institute creates a vibrant scientific community and a friendly research environment rich in both scientific and social opportunities.

Student community

There are currently around 120 PhD students training across the Institute creating a thriving and supportive postgraduate environment. The postgraduate student community is a vital part of the MRC Human Genetics Unit and students contribute to life in the institute in multiple ways, including curating events and selecting seminar speakers. Edinburgh also hosts an annual science festival and other related events, allowing students many opportunities to engage with the general public and talk about their research and interests. Edinburgh has often been voted as the UK city offering the highest quality of life and is renowned for its affordability and rich cultural life.
