The ISRC supports the production of documentaries about the nature of Italian migration to Scotland.

Diaspora Doc 1. Identity Replacements

The ISRC is delighted to announce its support of the production of a new documentary directed by artist Valentina Bonizzi and produced by Cultural Documents.

The film will present stories of life-long journeys between the rural villages of Filignano and Picinisco in central Italy and Scotland, told amongst the social and cultural changes of the last hundred years.

Valentina Bonizzi is an italian artist living in Scotland since 2005. Her work explores the transformational experience of displacement, particularly researching European Migration from 1850 until today. Her research has been supported by The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Creative Scotland, Stills Gallery, The Arts and Humanities Research Council, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee), Cultural Documents, Fondazione Fotografia (Modena, Italy) and Arts and Business Scotland.

Cultural Documents is a programme which creates cultural legacy from historical societies through creative research, residencies, production and presentations. Established by Deirdre MacKenna in 2009, outputs to date include the book Donne Italoscozzesi by Sandra Chistolini (Italy), A Purposeful Regression (exhibition and publication) and a series of research residencies exploring the legacy of Italian migration by artists Maria Thereza Alves (Brasil), Valentina Bonizzi (Italy and Scotland), Craig Coultahrd (Scotland), Richard Couzins (UK), Jimmie Durham (Berlin), Dante Gentile Lorusso (Italy), Stephen Partridge and Elaine Shemilt (Scotland).

 

Support for Cultural Documents' projects has been secured from Arts and Business Scotland; Italian Cultural Institute (Edinburgh); Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee); The Royal Society of Edinburgh; Provincia di Campobasso; Ing. Antonio Buono; Associazione Culturale Limiti Inchiusi and individual sponsors and patrons.
