Edinburgh Summer School 2024

Safeguarding for Pre-university Students

We want all Pre-university students to have an enjoyable experience in Edinburgh.

We have robust safeguarding measures in place to support students, and look after their safety and welfare during their stay.

What is safeguarding?

We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for our students, and recognise that we have a duty of care for all young people attending pre-university courses. Safeguarding is the process by which we achieve this.

By having safeguarding mechanisms in place, students and their guardians can have peace of mind that we take our responsibilities regarding the welfare and safety of pre-university participants very seriously, and will respond to issues or concerns quickly and appropriately.

How we safeguard Pre-university students

There are a number of ways in which we safeguard students:

  • Appointment of a Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Safeguarding Leads

  • Dedicated Resident Assistants who stay with students and supervise them at University accommodation

  • PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) certification for staff

  • Safeguarding training for staff

  • Codes of Conduct for staff and students

  • Robust policies and procedures to promote the welfare and safety of young people

  • Risk assessments for all pre-university activities

  • Clear reporting mechanisms for staff and students to raise issues or concerns

  • Optional arrival and departure transfers for eligible students

Setting expectations

To avoid misunderstandings, we want to be clear about some of the key conditions of pre-university placement. All students, without exception, must:

  • Meet our eligibility criteria

  • Arrive and depart on the dates we specify

  • Stay in University accommodation with our Resident Assistants, for the entirety of the summer school

  • Not leave Edinburgh at any point during the summer school, unless to attend supervised educational or social activities organised by us

  • Engage in all classes, and all educational and social activities

  • Adhere to all curfews

The above list is not exhaustive, and full details of our terms and rules can be found in the Pre-university Student Code of Conduct below. If students and/or their guardian disagree with any of our terms and rules, we cannot offer a pre-university placement.
