Everyone over the minimum age requirement of 16! Our language courses are open to all.
All classes are taught in person and on campus, with the exception of some Gaelic courses.
You can enrol on one of our language course through our online booking system. Simply choose a language from our list and decide on a level using our self-assessment information available on each language page, then use our website to book your place!

No, we do not require you to provide any proof of your language skills.
Short courses in languages are not-for-credit courses. We offer a selection of credit courses in languages for matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh - more info.
If you think your language course is not at the right level for you, you should discuss this with the teacher after your first class. Once you have agreed on the more appropriate language level, your teacher will request a transfer for you. Please note that transfer requests must be received before the third session.
No, you must enrol for each course individually. We strongly encourage you to book future courses 8 days before the start date of your progression course, as enrolment for courses is not automatic.
Unfortunately not, you can only attend the class for which you have enrolled.
There are no exams for our language courses. Our courses do not lead to a language qualification and no certificates are issued upon completion of the course. However, students who have attended at least 8 out of 10 classes of a course can request a letter of attendance from our Registration team. Please, contact them at col@ed.ac.uk after the end of the term.
