Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)

HESA (the Higher Education Statistics Agency) is the central agency responsible for collecting statistical data from all the UK Universities and other Higher Education Institutions. The results and aggregate data on students, institutions, and finances are distributed in both print and digital form.

HESA also provides HEIDI - a web-based management information service that provides access to HESA's quantitative data about higher education on a range of topics:

• Ethnicity
• Entry qualifications
• Course results
• First destinations of graduates
• Disability
• Overseas students
• Regional issues
• Academic staff
• Non-credit-bearing courses

The HEFCE site was retired in March 2018 and transferred to the National Web Archive. The Higher Education Business Community Interaction (HEBCI) statistics are now provided by HESA.

Access to HESA data is freely available.

The HEIDI online database requires a subscription. University of Edinburgh staff can get a user account from the Governance and Strategic Planning Office. University of Edinburgh students may make an appointment with the Research Data Service to access the data. Academic users can get access to the raw data without charge via the Society for Research into Higher Education with an individual or institutional membership (Edinburgh University is a member).
