Student card/student number

Your student number, which can be found on your University (matriculation) card, gives you access to library spaces and resources.

Why you should apply for a student card

It is useful to apply for your card even if you are not planning to visit the University or University Library in-person. Your student card is useful for many reasons:

  • It can be used for identification purposes.
  • It shows that you are a member of University of Edinburgh.
  • It carries your unique exam number.
  • It may be required for getting access to other university libraries e.g. SCONUL Access scheme.

If you are planning on visiting the University Library then you must have your student card, this is required to get access to the Library buildings and to borrow items.

Getting your first card

If your card expires while you are still studying at the University then you will need to contact Card Services about getting a replacement card, this will not happen automatically.

If your card is lost or stolen then you must contact Card Services about getting a replacement. There is a £10 charge for replacement cards. Card Services will provide details on how you can pay this.

Please ensure you keep the University up to date with any changes to your address. If your first card or replacement card is being sent to you it will be sent to the current address on file at the University. If this has changed you must amend your details first through Student Administration.
