Animal research

Information about animal research at the University.

Published information

The University of Edinburgh uses animals in research only when their use is justified on scientific, ethical and legal grounds and when no alternatives are available. All animal-related research at the University is carried out in strict compliance with the relevant legislation, which places tight controls on the use of animals for scientific research. This work is conducted under licences, which are reviewed and approved by the Home Office.

We publish

  • our policies on use of animals and information about the relevant regulations
  • the number of animals used in research by species
  • case studies
  • information about where we use alternatives
Timing Statistics are collated each year and published annually by April.
