Infection Medicine

Infection Medicine brought the "Disease Detectives" workshop to Niddrie Mill Primary School

Disease Detectives is an interactive workshop to highlight how infectious diseases are transmitted, how to detect and identify them, and how to choose successful therapy options to reduce the risk of generating resistant mutants.

Dr Samantha Griffiths, Nelly Mak and Elisha Millar brought the workshop "Disease Detectives" to two classes of P7 pupils at Niddrie Mill Primary School on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd March.

This one-hour workshop aims to highlight how infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi are transmitted, how to detect and identify them, how to choose successful therapy options to reduce the risk of generating resistant mutants. In doing so, we will highlight how scientists are tackling these problems and will give practical advice and feedback about what participants can do to help.

What did the pupils say?

The pupils engaged enthusiastically with the workshop and they said:

“ I loved that that woman understood how my brain worked to figure out what the answers were.”

“ That was a fun activity, can we do more?!”

“ The gel part was cool but disgusting too.”
