Bringing together those working in the arts and dementia across Scotland and Nigeria to engage in an international knowledge-exchange.

About

‘Arts and health’ is a rapidly burgeoning field exploring the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing. However, the presence of those from the Global South in the field is limited, with Western notions of both ‘arts’ and ‘health’ dominating. More needs to be done to engage in international knowledge-exchange and to collaborate across countries to ensure more equitable research practices. In a step towards addressing this, this event aims to bring together those working in the field of arts and health from Nigeria and Scotland to engage in an online knowledge-exchange event, hosted as part of Global South Arts & Health Week. We will focus specifically on the topic of the arts and dementia, but those working on broader, relevant topics are very welcome to attend.

Through this event, we aim to foster connections and foundations that can fuel future innovation and research that places intercultural knowledge-exchange as central to the arts and dementia. It will include a Keynote presentation from Kunle Adewale (Arts in Medicine Projects, Nigeria), practical arts activities, break-out room discussions, and ‘lightening presentations’ on priority themes. These themes will include the role of crafts, dance, nature and VR in arts and dementia research and practice.

This event is a joint collaboration between the Edinburgh Centre for Research on the Experience of Dementia (ECRED) and Arts in Medicine Projects, Nigeria (AiMP).

We welcome you to attend our online event on Tuesday 26th September 2023 11am-1pm. We are particularly interested to hear from those living with dementia, early career researchers, artists, policymakers, health and social care professionals.
