O James Garden CBE BSc MB ChB MD DSc(hon) FRCSEd FRCPEd FRSE FRCSCan(hon) FRACS(hon) FACS(hon) FRCS(hon) FCSHK(hon) FRCSI(hon) FFSTEd

James Garden is Professor Emeritus and formerly Regius Professor of Clinical Surgery, Director of Edinburgh Surgery Online and Dean International. He has previously served as Head of the School of Clinical Sciences and Community Health at the University of Edinburgh. He trained in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Paris, prior to being appointed as a clinical senior lecturer and specialist consultant HPB surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, supporting the establishment of the Scottish Liver Transplantation Programme and undertaking the first successful liver transplant in Scotland in 1992.

He has strong interests in surgical education and led the development in 2007 of the MSc in Surgical Sciences (Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification), a novel distance learning programme that supports the trainee through the early years of surgical training. All eight current Edinburgh Surgery Online masters programmes now support some 400 students based in over 40 countries at any one time. He was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching in 2010 and secured the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the University in 2014. He has actively supported the development of a strong scholarship programme to support surgeons based in low and middle income countries. He has drawn on his past experience as Chairman of the BJS Society and as an editor of several surgical journals to assist in the development of the Certificate Programme in Surgical Writing and Evidence Based Practice.

He is currently President of the James IV Association of Surgeons and is Past President of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the International Surgical Group, and the International Hepato Pancreatico Biliary Association (IHPBA). He is an honorary member or fellow of numerous surgical associations and surgical colleges. He served as Surgeon to the Queen in Scotland, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was made Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year Honours list in 2014 for his services to academic surgery.

Susan Morrow is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Her University role encompasses Deputy Programme Director for the Surgical Writing and Evidence Based Practice programme and Director of Quality Assurance (QA) for the Deanery of Clinical Sciences.

Susan has a research, clinical and educational background with a BSc in Pharmacology, a PhD in Molecular Biology, a Batchelor of Midwifery and a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice. Susan is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.

In her role as Deputy Programme Director for the Surgical Writing and Evidence Based Practice programme, Susan has responsibility for the management and strategic leadership of the programme, ensuring that teaching and assessment is of high quality, reputation and impact. Susan works closely with all stakeholders to ensure the intellectual rigour of the programme and to proactively address any issues that impact on programme delivery.

As Director of QA for the Deanery of Clinical Sciences, Susan leads the implementation, maintenance and review of learning and teaching quality assurance processes across the Deanery.

Outside of work, Susan enjoys spending time with family, hill walking and running. She also enjoys volunteering as a befriender to an older person in the local community.

Martyn is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery in Swansea, and holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship with the University of Edinburgh Department of Surgery. He has a long-held interest in academic publishing having started his Editorial career initially as a Junior Editor and then as a full Editor with the journal Colorectal Disease in 2011. Since 2018 he has been an Editor with BJS, and regularly teaches internationally on the subject surgical writing.
