CCBS PhD application routes A and B: applying to a funded PhD programme or individual project

The most common way to secure a supervisor and a project in the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences is to apply for a funded programme or individual project.

Route A: applying to a funded PhD programme

The University has many funded PhD programmes in areas relevant to CCBS. These programmes usually have multiple places available each year, and offer a choice of supervisors and projects, only some of which will be in CCBS.

A place on the PhD programme usually provides living costs (salary or stipend), tuition fees and an allowance for consumables and travel.

These programmes are highly competitive and have a recruitment round with a set deadline (refer to individual programme webpages for details). Most of the deadlines are between October and February for entry the following Autumn.

Each of these programmes is administered independently and you should contact the relevant programme administrator if you have questions.

Route B: applying for a funded individual project

Our academics sometimes obtain funding for an individual specific PhD project from UK Research and Innovation, from charities or philanthropic donations. Projects can be in a very wide range of research fields including laboratory science, clinical research, psychology and computational biology.

These opportunities usually provide living costs (salary or stipend), tuition fees and an allowance for consumables and travel.

Individual projects will be advertised on the Edinburgh Neuroscience PhD Gateway and usually, findaphd.com.

Most of the deadlines are between October and February for entry the following Autumn, but projects can be advertised at any time. There will be a set application deadline. The eligibility requirements and preferred academic background of the applicants will be specified in each advert.
