The Compassion Salon: Time For You

Deatils of the Compassion Salon workshop for Nursing Now's 2020 conference.

The Compassion Salon is a literary salon in Edinburgh, and a community around new and established authors and poets whose work relates to compassion and wellbeing.

This Compassion Salon workshop for Nursing Now's 2020 conference considers what we mean by belonging and compassion and how it is relevant under the present challenging circumstances, in our own lives and for those for whom we care. It outlines the nature of the stress response, and practices that help us down-regulate and promote compassion for ourselves and others. It includes an introduction to mindfulness, which research shows is an important part of self-compassion, and a short mindfulness practice.

The workshop was led by CS founder and director Dr Marti Balaam, Fellow in Medical Education and Lecturer in Nursing, with Dr Kitty Wheater, Mindfulness Chaplain. Actor and philanthropist Emilia Clarke, who is ambassador for Nursing Now, opens the workshop with a poem, Naomi Shihab Nye's 'Kindness'.

Hosted by Dr Marti Balaam, this salon will consider what we mean by belonging and compassion and how it is relevant under the present challenging circumstances, in our own lives and for those for whom we care. The workshop will help us to explore the fears that we all have, but don’t often share and facilitate a compassionate response for ourselves and others. The salon will also introduce the importance of mindfulness within self-compassion and Dr Kitty Wheater will deliver a mindfulness practice.
