Gregor Townsend MBE

2009 Inductee

A mercurial, world class rugby player, Gregor played at fly-half, full back and centre and was capped 82 times for Scotland, scoring 164 points. In 1997, he was a member of the series winning British and Irish Lions Team in South Africa. Let’s hope the current Lions’ Team can emulate Gregor’s achievement when they start their test series in South Africa later this month.

Gregor is widely acknowledged to be the most talented and exciting Scottish player of his generation ~ his exploits including scoring a try in every game in the last five Nations Championship in 1999, the first time that this has been achieved since 1925.

In 1995 his sublime reverse pass set up the last minute try for Gavin Hastings, which gave Scotland their first win against France in Paris for nearly 30 years.

As well as enjoying a glittering 10-year international career, he played professional rugby for top clubs, including Northampton Saints, Brive, Castres, Borders, Natal Sharks, and Montpelier.

Gregor graduated from the University in 1995 with an MA in Politics, and was also decorated with an MBE in 1999 for his services to rugby.
