Edinburgh Award reception puts students in the spotlight

More than 200 students from across the University joined a reception on 25 April to celebrate having completed the Edinburgh Award.

The award recognises students for their involvement in activities they do outside of their degree programme, from work experience to community engagement.

Attendees at the reception heard speeches from Shelagh Green, Director for Careers and Employability, Edinburgh University Sports Union President Peter Sawkins, who previously completed the award programme, and employers invited along to share their insights.

The Edinburgh Award is a unique opportunity for our students to get recognition and maximum benefit from experiences that help them prepare for life after university, including the world of work. I’m inspired to see the variety of activities our students participate in. It’s a very busy time of the year with exams and coursework, but this event has been a chance for our students to celebrate their achievements together and connect with each other.

The programme encourages students to reflect on and develop the skills they need to strive for success in the future, such as leadership and digital skills.

Approximately 1,000 students achieve an Edinburgh Award each year. The scheme began in 2011 and is run by staff from across the University and Students’ Association. There’s a variety of different strands for students to get involved with.
