Students set for race car challenge

A team of Edinburgh students is preparing to take part in Europe's leading educational motorsport competition.

The Edinburgh University Formula Student team has worked together to design and build a single-seat racing car to compete in Formula Student.

The competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, takes place at the Silverstone racetrack from 20-23 July 2017.

University team

The Edinburgh team is made up of more than 20 students from a range of disciplines, including engineering, business and economics.

Their car, which is powered by a modified motorcycle engine, is being constructed in the team's workshop at the University's King's Buildings campus.

Student engineers

The Formula Student contest aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.

Teams from around the world will take part in a series of events designed to test vehicle performance and assess students' business and design skills.

The competition is backed by leading figures in the motorsport industry.
